Pastor David Ibiyeomie has received a flurry of reactions to his pronouncements on the issues of insecurity, national unity and the place of religion in Nigeria’s destiny.
In a recent sermon, Ibiyeomie ruled out the chance of Nigeria becoming an Islamic state, claiming that the country’s religious and ethnic variety renders such eventuality a non-possibility.
He said that Nigerians from all walks of life and all parts of the country would not throw away their convictions or identities.
The cleric also spoke strongly on security concerns facing the country. He said the Nigerian military has the capacity to decisively tackle armed groups provided it is given the assistance and direction needed.
He also asked about talks of foreign security involvement in Nigeria’s internal security challenges.
The statements are coming at a time when the country is in the middle of talks about insecurity, terrorism, national cohesion and the relationship between religion and politics in Nigeria.
His words in part …
“This whole agenda is to make Nigeria an Islamic country and it will never happen. Are you telling me they are going to convert an Igbo man or a South-South man to be a Muslim? “If the Nigerian army wants to wipe them off, they can do it in one day. And they have the power to do so. Are you bringing Turkish army to come protect Nigeria? Thanks so much. We are not id!d. Nigeria will not be an islamic country. If they want it, they can take their share and leave.” “But Islam will never rule this country
