A number of Nigerian celebrities gathered in Lagos on June 10, 2026, for a Service of Songs to honour the late Nollywood star Alex Ekubo.

Many friends, colleagues, admirers and well-wishers paid a last respect to the actor despite heavy rains in the city. Guests donned white as a symbol of peace in tribute to the life and legacy of the renowned movie actor.

Some of those in attendance are IK Ogbonna, Funke Akindele, Williams Uchemba, Shaffy Bello, Kunle Remi, Bam Bam, Boma, Mike Godson, Enioluwa, Dayo Amusa, Nancy Isime, Moses Bliss, Femi Branch, Ruth Kadiri, Ini Edo, Yomi Casual, AY Makun, Emoney, Kcee, Ebuka and many others.

The gathering was filled with emotional tributes from those who knew Alex personally, and others who adored him from afar. BBNaija Season 10 housemate Kaybobo sent an emotional statement saying that he never met Alex Ekubo but grew up watching him on television and appreciated his work so much.

I didn’t know Alex personally but I grew up watching him on TV and looked up to him. “I admired him a lot,” Kaybobo remarked.

Born Alex Ekubo-Okwaraeke in Port Harcourt, Alex became one of Nollywood’s most prominent actors. His charisma, talent and spectacular performances endeared him to fans across Nigeria and Africa.

He featured in several popular productions in his career including Afamefuna, Hire a Woman, A Sunday Affair, The Bling Lagosians, Weekend Getaway and the music video for Johnny. Whether he was a romantic hero, an underdog or a man working for social change, Alex gave a passion and authenticity to every part.

Alex Ekubo died on May 11, 2026 at the age of 40 following a protracted fight with cancer. His death is a big loss to Nollywood and the entertainment business.

Friends, colleagues and admirers paid tribute to him not only as an excellent actor, but as a kind-hearted person who provided joy and laughter to those around him.

The Service of Songs was a loud reminder of the impact Alex Ekubo had in his lifetime.
