Mugeez is a Ghanaian award winning singer and songwriter. His real name is Rashid Abdul Mugeez. He was born in Tema (Accra, Ghana) and rose to fame in the popular Afrobeats/Hiplife duo R2Bees (Refuse to Be Broke), which he founded with his cousin Faisal Hakeem (aka Omar Sterling) in 2007. The recent album of R2Bees called Site 15 from 2019 made it to the top 10 on the Billboard chart.

Mugeez is always working with people in the Africa entertainment industry like Wizkid, Mr Eazi and Davido. He has also collaborated with Grammy winner Ed Sheeran on Boa Me. In April 2019, Mugeez launched his record company, Extrial Music to promote his solo efforts, as well as upcoming musicians.

Early Life and career

The love for rap music started from childhood for Rashid Abdul Mugeez, and in 2007 he formed R2Bees with his cousin. They were an instant hit in Ghana with their debut album Da Revolution in 2009. They followed that up with Da Revolution II in 2012 before the pair were nominated for Best International Act at the 2013 BET Awards.

In the following years, other R2Bees tracks were released and Mugeez also went solo, appearing on recordings by artists like Criss Waddle, Mr. Eazi and DJ Breezy. In 2017, he was featured on Fuse ODG’s hit “Boa Me”, alongside Ed Sheeran.

The two cousins also went to the same primary, junior and senior secondary schools in Tema and resided in the same house. They started early in their career to represent their school in school music tournaments. This resulted in their participation in the popular radio competition Kasahare, which they won. They achieved recognition in their town by their performance.

2007-2012: Formation of R2Bees and “Da Revolution” – Debut Album R2Bees

R2Bees was officially created in 2007 by the cousins and they rapidly became a favourite in Ghana. Mugeez is the primary singer of R2Bees and Omar Sterling is the rapper and CEO of R2Bees Entertainment. R2Bees’ official producer from the get go, KillBeatz’s (Joseph Addison) R2Bees’ lyrics are in Twi and Ghanaian Pidgin English and their music is a blend of Afrobeats and Hiplife, a Ghanaian music style that mixes Ghanaian culture and Hip Hop.

2019: Foundation of Extrial Music

The Site 15 album featuring Afrobeats legends Wizkid & Burna Boy and newcomers such as King Promise & Kwesi Arthur with tracks such as “Over”, “Sunshine”, “Yesterday” & “My Baby” was followed by Mugeez founding the record label Extrial Music, to promote his own solo projects and also to support up-and-coming artists.

First up, Mugeez released the tracks ‘Regular’ with Sarkodie and ‘Your Number’ featuring Juls and King Promise. Mugeez also signed Tecknikal, a young budding artist from Ghana as the first artist on his record label. In April 2019, after the creation of Extrial, Mugeez released the track “Dripping” featuring DJ Mic Smith and Kwesi Arthur.

“Chihuahua” is Mugeez’s first solo song of 2020 and was released on 27 March following an exclusive pre-release on audio. The single also found its place in “African Heat”, Spotify’s largest Afrobeats playlist, as well as a number of Apple editorial playlists. “Six In Da Morning” dropped on the 8th of May that year.
