Emma Charlotte Duerre Watson was born on April 15, 1990, in Paris, to her English parents, Jacqueline Luesby and Chris Watson, who are both lawyers. Until she was five, Watson lived in Maisons-Laffitte, near Paris, before her parents’ separation.

She moved to England to live with her mother in Oxfordshire and spent weekends at her father’s place in London.

She moved to Oxford with her mother and brother and went to the Dragon School until 2003. Since the age of six, she had dreams of being an actress, so she learned singing, dancing, and acting at Stagecoach Theatre Arts in Oxford.

Career

Watson started her professional acting career in 1999 when she auditioned for a part in the film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). She was cast as Hermione, one of Harry Potter’s closest friends, who is both smart and sensible.

The movie was a box-office hit, and Watson reprised her role in the franchise’s following installments: Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002), Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2007), Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince (2009), Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010), and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).

Following the conclusion of the Potter films, Watson started looking for more mature roles. She landed her first significant role in the drama The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012), portraying a high school senior who befriends a freshman dealing with serious depression.

She went on to star in the crime drama The Bling Ring (2013), the historical thriller The Colony (also known as Colonia; 2015), and the sci-fi thriller The Circle (2017). Although these movies didn’t do exceptionally well at the box office, Watson achieved another major success with the live-action Disney adaptation of Beauty and the Beast (2017).

In 2019, she took on the role of Meg March in Greta Gerwig’s highly praised adaptation of Louisa May Alcott’s beloved children’s book, Little Women.

Watson balanced her acting career with pursuing a college degree. She began her studies at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, in 2009. She took time off as needed for filming and also spent a year at the University of Oxford. In 2014, Watson graduated from Brown University with a bachelor’s degree in English literature.

That year, she received the title of United Nations Women Goodwill Ambassador. She championed women’s rights and gender equality. Between 2016 and 2020, Watson ran Our Shared Shelf, an online feminist book club that focused on reading and discussing books by and about women.

In 2021, there were multiple rumors suggesting that Watson was either engaged or retiring from acting. Watson and her team refuted the claims; she later characterized the speculation as sensationalism and explained her limited public presence as a continuation of social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2022, Watson met up with some of her fellow cast members from the Harry Potter films for an HBO Max special called Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts.

Watson started her modeling career in 2005 with a photo shoot for Teen Vogue, which made her the youngest cover model for the magazine. Three years later, the British media claimed that Watson would take over from Keira Knightley as Chanel’s ambassador, but all parties denied the rumors.

After months of speculation, Watson announced in June 2009 that she would be the face of Burberry’s Autumn/Winter 2009 campaign, for which she was reportedly paid a six-figure sum. In Burberry’s Spring/Summer 2010 campaign, she was featured alongside her brother Alex, artists George Craig and Matt Gilmour, and model Max Hurd.

In February 2011, Watson received the British Elle Style Icon Award from Dame Vivienne Westwood. In March 2011, Watson revealed that she had been selected as the face of Lancôme, marking her ongoing presence in fashion advertising.
