Mohammed Ismail Sherif Kwaku Frimpong (born 9 January 2002), better known by his stage name Black Sherif, is a Ghanaian singer and performer from Konongo. He made his mainstream breakthrough in July 2021 with the street anthem “Second Sermon.” His captivating hooks and choruses have helped him rack up over 100 million streams on Audiomack with his music charting and being played everywhere from influencer videos on social media to NBA All-Star games.
His single “Kwaku the Traveller” which was released in March 2022 topped the Ghanaian and Nigerian Apple Music charts and by August that year was the most Shazamed music in the world across genres.
Early life and education
Black Sherif was born and raised in Konongo-Zongo, his Islamic village in Ghana’s Ashanti region. When Black Sherif’s parents were abroad, he moved in with his auntie and other extended family members at the age of 10. His wandering existence exposed him to many influences and diverse civilizations at a very young age.
He had his basic education at an Islamic school in Konongo-Zongo and his secondary education at Kumasi Academy where his love in Music and dancing grew.
He is an alumnus of University of Professional Studies (UPSA) and a student of the University Of Ghana.
Musical Career
Black Sherif has been on a meteoric rise since he released his “First Sermon” freestyle in May 2021. Two months later, he returned with “Second Sermon” as a voice of the Youth, a viral success that made him a force to be reckoned with in 2021.
Black Sherif who was making waves in the local and international music industry got three prizes on the night including Hiphop Artiste of the Year, Hiplife Song of the Year and New Artiste of the Year during the first edition of the Ghana Music 2021 prizes.
He also picked four prestigious trophies at the 5th edition of the 3Music trophies held at the Grand arena of the Ghana international conference.
He performed at the 2021 MTN FA Cup final match between Accra Hearts of Oak and Ashanti Gold SC.
Black Sherif met Kendrick Lamar in May 2022 with Stonebwoy, Amaarae and Smallgod when he visited Ghana and had a private album listening party in Accra for his new album, Mr. Morales & The Big Steppers.In June 2022, Boomplay recognized Black Sherif as the first Ghanaian artist to achieve 100 Million streams on the site.

Black sheriff sued for alleged contract breach on 11 April 2022 . The case comes after allegations that Black Sherif abandoned his investor after he invested in his career. Black Sherif is believed to have entered into a distribution contract with Empire Music without his consent, despite having purportedly entered into a business management arrangement with the investor. Investor Shadrach Agyei Owusu, CEO of Waynes Chavis Consult, wants the court to restrain Black Sherif from performing at events without his approval. Black Sherif was fortunate as the Accra High Court (Commercial Division) denied an injunction brought against him which sought to stop the musician from performing music he made under his former management.
