There is no gainsaying that Peter Okoye aka Mr. P is Nigeria’s most popular choreographing musician. Peter or Mr. P is the twin brother of Paul Okoye aka Rudeboy. was a part of the defunct P-Square group. A phenomenal group comprised of the two twin brothers who were especially noted for their incredible music videos, the explosion of energies, beautiful tunes and expertly coordinated performances. They couldn’t work out their irreconcilable differences and sadly the pair went their separate ways.
Mr. P, sometimes dubbed the African Usher Raymond, has seen his solo career expand consistently, beating the odds despite the various backlashes from fans of the defunct trio (P-Square) who insist that Rudeboy looks to be doing better. In this essay, we are going to talk about the biography of Peter Okoye, who is also known as Mr. P.
Peter Okoye (born 18 November 1981), often known as ‘Mr P‘, is a Nigerian musician, songwriter and recording artist and former member of the group P-Square. He hails from Ifite, Dunu region of Anambra State. Peter Okoye attended St. Murumba secondary school in Jos Nigeria. He later studied Business Administration at University of Abuja.
Peter is a native of Anambra State but was born with his twin brother, Paul in Jos. The duo went to St. Murumba Secondary School in Jos and later attended the University of Abuja where they studied Business Administration.
Peter joined his school music and acting club, along with his brother where they started singing, dancing and impersonating songs by MC Hammer, Bobby Brown and Michael Jackson.
They would eventually establish an Acappella quartet dubbed “MMMPP” (M Clef a.k.a. Itemoh, Michael, Melvin, Peter and Paul). They were inspired by their music icon Michael Jackson and started break dancing. They established a group named “Smooth Criminals” in 1997. They dropped M Clef from the group “MMMPP” which eventually transformed to “MMPP”. Their dance routine and creative talent soon earned them household names in the city of Jos where they danced at school functions and other occasions.
Later on in 1999 Peter went back to music school to practice his talents on piano, drums, bass and rhythm guitar with his twin. They have provided soundtracks for several films including Tobi, Mama Sunday, Moment of Bitterness and Eva’s River.
They also applied to read Business Administration at University of Abuja the same year. The Smooth Criminals broke up after its members went off to different universities. “Double P”, “P&P”, and “Da Pees” were some of the names Peter and Paul used for their own group before settling on “P-Square”. They were handled by Bayo Odusami nicknamed Howie T, veteran concert promoter and CEO of Adrot Nigeria Limited.
Peter was the showman in the now disbanded P-Square ensemble. He was mostly responsible for the choreography and dancing routines the group did either in live concerts or in their music videos. After multiple back and forth with the group, the twin sensation parted apart over irreconcilable differences and chose for themselves a career path that would go on to describe them till date. There were rumours that certain powerful Nigerians like Aliko Dangote intervened before it collapsed to reconcile the issue between the two. The group’s exit meant the collapse of their multi-million Naira endorsement with Globacom Telecommmunications, Nigeria’s indigenous telecommunication operator. To add to that, they feel from the top of the food chain as Nigeria’s biggest performers to what many would later dub as ‘upcoming acts’.
Peter never had much of a singing voice. Though from his current solo tracks there are a couple of songs that we felt he must have impacted during the heyday of P-Square. The group presumably released explosive songs like Get Squared, Alingo, Danger etc.
Peter has recorded a decent number of songs since his solo career, but has achieved minimal success, compared to his twin brother, Paul who has been hailed by fans as the most successful of the twins.
Peter has released a few singles including One More Night, Karma, Cool Down, Wokie Wokie and For my Head. He is generally consistent but often gets criticized for his pattern of music which is distinguished by his colourful and dynamic choreographies.
Peter Okoye, aka Mr P, is married to his longtime lover Lola Omotayo-Okoye and has two children, a boy and a girl. Mr P’s first son Andre is a budding football talent currently in Barcelona Academy, Spain. Lola Omotayo is reportedly older than Peter Okoye (Mr P)
Peter Okoye aka Mr P is one of the richest musicians in Nigeria with an estimated net worth of $11 million. He is also the owner and CEO of the Zoom Lifestyle Lottery and owns a mansion in Atlanta Georgia next to his identical brother.
