Afro-fusion star Oxlade mixes his homegrown Nigerian sounds with a host of other genres including R&B and gospel. The infectious “Away” from his 2020 Oxygene EP, years of steady climbing culminated in the infectious “Away,” gaining some traction at home and in North America. He kept grinding, producing a prolific run of smooth and rhythmic singles and a follow-up EP, 2021’s Eclipse. Then, he rocketed to stardom with the massive 2022 hit “Ku Lo Sa,” which hit charts around the world. It paved the way for his musically adventurous 2024 full-length debut, Oxlade from Africa, which took in elements of R&B, Afro-swing, amapiano, gospel and coupé-décalé.

Ikuforiji Olaitan Abdulrahman was born in Surulere, a suburb of Lagos, and started singing at a young age after the death of his mother; he was raised by his father, a lecturer at Lagos State University, and his grandmother. He studied history and international relations at his father’s university for a while, but ultimately chose to pursue his musical interests. Abdulrahman, who now performs as Oxlade, landed a publishing deal after appearing on Blaqbonez’s 2018 track “Mamiwota,” and then a record deal with the Troniq Music label. He established himself on early singles like “Shugar” and the DJ Tunez collaboration “Causing Trouble,” while appearances with bona fide Nigerian stars like Davido and Wizkid raised his profile.

Oxlade’s major introduction to fans outside his own country came with the 2020 release of the Oxygene EP and its breakout single, “Away,” which earned a shout-out from Drake and landed on Rolling Stone’s year-end list. He worked fast and dropped more singles, including the smooth “DKT,” the Dolapo and Ms Banks collab “Interest,” which charted in the U.K, and the 2021 hit “Ojuju” from his Eclipse EP and Ice Prince feature “Kolo,” which kept Oxlade’s star rising. His first major-label release for Columbia Records U.K. was “Want You,” which came out in 2022 after Columbia signed him earlier that year.

His breakout hit came a few months later, when Oxlade released “Ku Lo Sa” for German video platform ColorsxStudios. The song, with its dreamy vocals, gentle rhythm and chiming guitars, won him fans around the world and became a hit across Europe and North America. Later that year a remix of the song featuring Cuban singer Camila Cabello only helped his status. Oxlade followed two EPs and a global smash with work on his debut album with South African producer Spax. The first two songs from these sessions, “Ovami” with Flavour and “Intoxycated” featuring Dave, were released in 2023. He kept building up to his debut album, Oxlade from Africa, in the first half of 2024 with a series of mini-documentaries also called From Africa, where the singer talks to creators such as photographer Mous Lamrabat and entrepreneur Roger Dupé.
