Ademola Lookman Biography & Early Life
Ademola Lookman (born 20 October 1997) is a Nigerian footballer who plays as a winger for Premier League club Leicester City . Lookman was reared by his parents Mr and Mrs Lookman and siblings whose names are not known. His Nigerian heritage meant he was eligible to play for both England and Nigeria.
His father is a Yoruba from Lagos State and is a huge follower of football and played a major influence in shaping his early love for the game. Ademola Lookman went to St Thomas the Apostle College in Peckham and was a top student, passing with three A*s and five As in his GCSEs.
Career
Lookman played for Waterloo, a youth football team in the London Borough of Lambeth, before joining Charlton Athletic’s academy in 2014. His goalscoring record for the U18 and U21 sides saw him progress rapidly through the Charlton junior system and he made his Addicks first-team debut on 3 November 2015.
He scored his debut goal for the squad in a 3–2 loss against Brighton & Hove Albion on 5 December 2015. Ten days later he got both goals for Charlton in a 2-2 draw with Bolton Wanderers. Lookman signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Everton on 5 January 2017 for an undisclosed fee, thought to be £7.5m, potentially rising to £11m with add-ons.
He netted the fourth goal in the game ten days later and made his club debut in the 90th minute of a 4-0 victory over Manchester City when he replaced Ross Barkley. Lookman made his European bow as Everton won 1-0 over MFK Ružomberok in the first leg of the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
Manager Sam Allardyce had been adamant that Lookman would not be going out on loan during the January 2018 transfer window but the club eventually sanction a temporary switch to Championship side Derby County where he was expected to be a regular fixture in the first team. However, the midfielder insisted on a different move and pledged his future to Bundesliga side RB Leipzig till the end of the 2017-2018 campaign.
Lookman debuted in Leipzig as a late substitution against Borussia Mönchengladbach and scored the game-winning goal. On July 25, 2019, Lookman signed a five-year contract with RB Leipzig. On September 30, 2020, he joined Premier League side Fulham on a season-long loan deal. He netted his first league goal for Fulham on October 18 against Sheffield United.
On 31 August 2021, Lookman signed for Leicester City on a season-long loan. He made his Leicester debut in the 73rd minute of a 1–0 defeat against Manchester City on 11 September 2021. He scored the winner in a 1-0 win against Liverpool on 28 December 2021.
Ademola Lookman has reportedly inked a four-year deal worth €15m with Serie A side Atalanta on August 4, 2022. He scored on his debut for the side in a 2-0 win over Sampdoria in Serie A on August 13. January 2023 – scored three goals in a row: a 3-3 Serie A tie with Juventus, a 5-2 Coppa Italia win over Spezia and an 8-2 Serie A win over Salernitana.
His first career hat-trick came in the Europa League final at the Dublin Arena on 22 May 2024 when Atalanta beat Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 to win the cup for the first time in the club’s history. Pierino Prati was also the first to score a hat-trick in a men’s one-legged European final, in 1969.
Born in Nigeria, Lookman helped the Super Eagles reach the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Lookman is also the first current Atalanta player to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or, thanks to Atalanta’s victory in the 2023-24 UEFA Europa League.
After Atalanta’s Champions League defeat to Club Brügge, Gasperini branded Lookman the worst penalty taker he had ever seen. He said Lookman took a shot he should not have taken. July 2025 – Inter Milan’s prime attacking target for the 2025-26 season is Lookman, according to Corriere dello Sport.
International career
Lookman was born in England to Nigerian parents and is eligible to play for either country’s national teams. His first taste of international action came when he was chosen for England’s under-19s in Mexico. That summer he was picked to play in the European U19 Championships. Lookman, who was approached by national coach Gernot Rohr to switch allegiance to Nigeria, rejected down the offer in early 2017.
Lookman was included in the England under-20 squad for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup. He scored three goals in the tournament, two against Costa Rica in the Round of 16 and one against Italy in the semi-finals. England won the World Championship for the first time since 1966, beating Venezuela 1-0 in the final.
He was first called into the England under-21 squad in September 2017 for a European Championship qualifier with the Netherlands and Latvia. He debuted in the opening game, assisting his Everton colleague Dominic Calvert-Lewin for England’s goal in a 1-1 draw.
Lookman again turned down Nigeria in early 2018 after a meeting with the Nigeria Football Federation president. He rejected a third call-up from Nigeria in September 2018 after being convinced by England senior manager, Gareth Southgate, that he was in his plans.
Lookman, despite his success with youth teams and senior caps for England, and after previous rejections of overtures to play for Nigeria, announced in January 2020 that he will switch his international allegiance to Nigeria. But Lookman insisted that his ambition to play for England had not changed.
Lookman received the go-ahead from FIFA on February 10, 2022 to represent Nigeria internationally. Lookman made his Nigeria debut on March 25, 2022, in a scoreless draw with Ghana in the third round of African section qualifying for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Lookman was named in Nigeria’s squad for the 2023 African Cup of Nations, which is being hosted by Ivory Coast. He scored the only goal in Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final win over Angola and both goals in their 2-0 round of 16 win against Cameroon. Ivory Coast beat Nigeria 1-2 in the final.
